Join us for a National Poetry Month celebration, as Chicago-based poets Rachel Slotnick and Valerie Wallace read from their work,. Both poets are celebrating the release of new books. This event is free and open to the public.
Rachel Slotnick's collection is In Lieu of Flowers, In this surreal series of dreamscapes, bears roam the subway and fathers become fish. But for all of the fantastic imagery in this stunning debut poetry collection there are equally memorable explorations of more familiar terrain: the landscapes of our lives and relationships. Rachel has described herself as "an author, muralist, horse-lover, novice chef, bridezilla and displaced Californian." She received her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and her visual work is on permanent display at the Joan Flasch Artist Book Collection at the School of the Art Institute. She has completed murals for the 35th, 39th, 46th, and 47th wards. Her publications include Mad Hatter’s Review, Thrice Fiction,and The Brooklyn Rail, among others. Rachel was the first place winner of RHINO’s Founder’s Prize. Rachel currently resides in Chicago where she works as Adjunct Faculty at Chicago City Colleges, the Illinois Art Institute, and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
Valerie Wallace's new book is The House of McQueen. She is also the author of the chapbook The Dictators' Guide to Good Housekeeping (2011). She earned her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and is the Associate Director of Communications for the project Virtue, Happiness, & the Meaning of Life at the University of Chicago.
